Determining Importance

When readers determine importance, they reflect on what they read and think about what was most important in the text.

Determining Importance

The most important parts of a text are the most important parts to remember. What is important in a text depends on the reader. When a reader determines what is most important, they consider their prior knowledge, the new information they learned while reading, and whether or not that information is helpful in understanding the text.

When readers determine importance, they make sure to think about what they already know, what they have learned and what is most important to helping them understand the text.
